Research Assistant/ Research Fellow
Job description
Join Edinburgh Napier University and engineer a career that shapes the future
Research Assistant/Research Fellow - 15 month contract
We are currently looking for a Research Assistant or Research Fellow to join the School of Engineering & the Built Environment to contribute to the success of the EPSRC funded project "Getting the numbers right and getting
the right numbers: quantifying the embodied carbon of building structures".
Edinburgh Napier's School of Engineering & the Built Environment has a long history of innovative applied research, working with both industry specialists and the government on cutting-edge projects that are internationally renowned and world-leading. From automation and robotics, energy and renewables, to advanced materials, manufacturing and product design engineering our work has gained national and international recognition and influences our teaching programmes. We are specifically proud to host the Transport Research Institute and the Institute for Sustainable Construction, two internationally leading institutes with a strong research focus.
Here at Edinburgh Napier we actively promote a strong inclusive environment and are proud of the progress of our inclusivity strategy, following our recent SEBE Athena Swan accreditation. Edinburgh Napier University is committed to supporting equality in the workplace and encourages diversity. We currently hold a bronze Athena SWAN institutional award.
The Role
As Research Assistant/Research Fellow you will support the goals and objectives of the research project, which has a long-term aim to allow the UK to monitor and mitigate its building-related carbon emissions and progress effectively towards its mid-century carbon targets.
Specifically, the project seeks to answer the following two questions:
How do different materials affect the whole life carbon emissions of building structures - all other things being equal?
What are the whole life carbon emissions of building structures for different building types in the UK?
Overall, the project will establish the embodied carbon of building structures for different building types and different structural materials to produce realistic and reliable numbers as well as design guidelines to facilitate a quicker and wider transition to a low-carbon built environment.
You will assist with grant administration and the writing of reports for funding bodies. You will be required to attend meeting with the industrial partners and contribute to the preparation and writing up of results for academic publications.
Who We Are Looking For
Essential requirements:
A doctoral level qualification or equivalent achieved (or close to obtaining) in Civil Engineering or a relevant related field
Evidence of successful publications of academic research in journals relevant to the project or its wider context
Expertise in Embodied Carbon and Life Cycle assessment & Civil Engineering
Programming skills ideally in MATLAB and/or Python
High level of knowledge of building structures and embodied carbon assessments with a holistic knowledge of sustainability issues in the built environment
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work to tight deadlines and manage workload autonomously
Desirable Requirements:
Demonstrated experience in data collection, analysis and processing
Experience working in a relevant industry
