SEBE PhD Studentship
PhD Studentship:
Numerical (geomechanical) modelling of the seismic/dynamic behaviour of rubber/sand mixtures as a ground improvement method.
Department: School of Engineering and the Built Environment
Job status: Full Time
Contract type: Fixed Term (3 year)
Stipend: GBP 14,057 per annum
Closing Date: Friday 27th October
Job Summary
Research team led by: Dr Daniel Barreto, Dr John McDougall
This studentship will provide a bursary of GBP 14,057 p.a. plus Home/EU fees (only) of GBP 4,400 for 3 years (Subject to review and satisfactory progress.)
The Geotechnics team within the Engineering Research Group (ERG) at Edinburgh Napier University has been working on the behaviour of rubber/soil mixtures, for both static and dynamic applications for over 3 years now. Building on the success of the dynamic investigation, it is expanding its research into the use of rubber/soil mixtures to improve the seismic behaviour of structures built in under-developed countries that are prone to earthquakes. ERG is offering a PhD studentship position to enable a suitably qualified candidate to join the research team.
The studentship will focus on the numerical (geomechanical) modelling of rubber/soil mixtures. Two scenarios are of interest to us: the simulation of dynamic element tests (performed in house on cyclic triaxial machine) and the performance of different geometric configurations of rubber/soil mixtures in the field. It is anticipated that the successful student would also be involved in large-scale shaking table tests being developed in conjunction with partner institutions.
Candidate Profile
Interested applicants should:-
1. hold a Masters in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology or equivalent in a related discipline. We will also consider candidates with a good Honours degree (2:1 or above) in Civil engineering or equivalent in related discipline.
2. have experience in the numerical modelling in geotechnics using finite and/or discrete element methods
3. be self-motivated, have good communication skills and critical thought
4. desirably have previous experience working on related projects
The studentship is available immediately. All applications must be received by Friday 27th October 2017, with interviews expected to take place on the week commencing from 13th November.
For informal enquiries about the project, please contact Dr John McDougall (j.mcdougall@napier.ac.uk) or Dr Daniel Barreto (d.barreto@napier.ac.uk) in the first instance.
