Senior Research Fellow
We are currently looking for a Senior Research Fellow to join our
Transport Research Institute
(TRI) within our School of Engineering & the Built Environment (SEBE).
SEBE has a long history of innovative applied research, working with both industry
specialists and the government on cutting edge projects that are internationally renowned and world leading/
From automation and robotics, energy and renewables, to advances materials, manufacturing and product design engineering, our work has gained national and international recognition and influences our teaching programmes. We are specifically proud to host the

The role
Working closely with our Director of TRI,
Tom Rye
, you will play a key role in delivering part of the EU Horizon 2020 project - Park4SUMP. Park4SUMP is about managing car parking in the framework of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs, known as Local Transport Plans or Strategies in the UK).
You will conduct research on existing parking management policies and systems around the EU whilst developing guidance on parking in SUMPs. You will be responsible for managing and maintaining relationships between Ministries and the local authorities, including delivering training materials on parking in SUMPs to professionals from these location authorities (in particular southern and eastern Europe). You will be expected to lead work to generate further research and/or consultancy income for the Institute whilst leading work on academic publications.
You will conduct continuous project evaluations and development throughout the project.
Some travel within the rest of the EU is required for this post. This will roughly be around four trips per year for around 3 to 4 days, however please note this is given as an estimation and may differ depending on the needs of the project.
Who we are looking for
Essential requirements:
PhD in a subject related to transport policy, behaviour change, staff development, change in organisational culture or similar
Relevant experience working in a local authority, transport consultancy or similar context
Experience developing and delivering training material and SUMPs themselves
Experience of policy or design issues relating to parking, especially on-street
Excellent project management skills and proficient in Microsoft Office
Desirable Requirements:
Experience of publishing in academic journals
Experience of procurement issues in a public sector environment
Experience of developing and implementing SUMPs or other strategic transport policy documents
