We are looking for an enthusiastic, open-minded individual to join our growing English Suite of programmes. Edinburgh Napier is The Times and The Sunday Times top modern university in Scotland. We are number 2 for English out of all UK modern universities (Good University Guide 2021), and all members of the English team are research active.
Founded in 2007, the undergraduate programme has consistently strong NSS ratings. Our programmes encourage an outward-looking approach in teaching, learning and research. Members of the team have worked with a range of non-academic partners, from Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature and Edinburgh International Book Festival, to Surgeons’ Hall Museums and the Scottish Prison Service.
We are based at our Merchiston Campus, in the School of Arts & Creative Industries (SACI), located in the beautiful and historic heart of Morningside, Edinburgh. The School hosts a range of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes, and plays an active part in the creative industries in Scotland. To find more information about SACI please click here.
The role
You will contribute to the delivery of our successful English Suite, including BA (Hons) English, BA (Hons) English & Film and BA (Hons) Acting & English.
You will be expected to teach flexibly across the curriculum and historical period, including responsibility for teaching and redesigning a second-year module in global/postcolonial Shakespeare, and a final-year option on ‘Postcolonial Fiction and Film’, which can be tailored and redesigned based on your research expertise. You will also act as Personal Tutor for students and supervise research students and dissertations at undergraduate level as appropriate.
Who we are looking for
You must have a doctorate in English with a research specialism in post- or decolonial literatures, critical race studies and/or diasporic literatures, and the ability to teach postcolonial approaches to Shakespeare/the early modern period. You will demonstrate a high level of experience in developing, designing and delivering teaching and student-centred learning. You will have a record of REF-able publications commensurate with career stage, and a research plan with potential for external income generation.
We are looking for a colleague with enthusiasm for cross-disciplinary engagement who is comfortable working independently and as part of a team, and who will actively contribute to our research culture. We welcome applications from all individuals and particularly from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates as members of these groups are currently under-represented in the School. All appointments will be based on merit.
